Verinag

About Verinag

Verinag is a historic spring and Mughal garden located in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, revered as the source of the mighty Jhelum River (Vitasta in Sanskrit). The spring emerges from the base of a hill and forms a beautiful octagonal pool built by Emperor Jahangir in 1620 CE, later completed by his son Shah Jahan. This crystal-clear spring discharges water at a constant temperature throughout the year, creating a mystical atmosphere that has attracted pilgrims, poets, and travelers for centuries.

The name "Verinag" derives from "Veer" (lord/hero) and "Nag" (spring), referring to Lord Shiva or the serpent deity associated with the spring. The Mughal garden surrounding the octagonal pool features symmetrical architecture with arched alcoves, terraced lawns, and flowing water channels. Tall chinar trees, cascading waters, and mountain backdrops create a serene atmosphere. As the birthplace of Kashmir's lifeline river, Verinag holds immense religious, historical, and ecological significance.
