Shalimar Bagh

About Shalimar Bagh

Shalimar Bagh, meaning "Abode of Love," is the largest and most celebrated Mughal garden in Kashmir. Built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan in 1619, this magnificent garden epitomizes the zenith of Mughal horticulture and architecture. Located on the northeastern shore of Dal Lake, the garden extends over 31 acres with a perfect blend of Persian and Kashmiri landscaping traditions.

The garden is designed as a four-terraced structure, following the classical Persian charbagh layout, with the central water channel flowing through all terraces. The name is also associated with one of Jahangir's many titles - "Shalimar." The garden has been immortalized in songs, poetry, and films, making it not just a historical monument but also a cultural icon of Kashmir's romantic legacy.
