Nishat Bagh

About Nishat Bagh

Nishat Bagh, meaning "Garden of Bliss" or "Garden of Delight," is the second-largest Mughal garden in Kashmir. Built in 1633 by Asif Khan, elder brother of Empress Nur Jahan and father of Empress Mumtaz Mahal, this spectacular terraced garden sits on the eastern shore of Dal Lake with the Zabarwan Mountains as its backdrop. The garden is designed as a perfect example of Mughal horticulture with a blend of Persian and Kashmiri elements.

Spanning 46 acres, Nishat Bagh features twelve terraces representing the twelve zodiac signs. The garden offers stunning views of Dal Lake and is particularly renowned for its vibrant flowerbeds, majestic Chinar trees, and the central water channel that cascades down from the mountain. Legend has it that Emperor Shah Jahan was so impressed by the garden that Asif Khan offered it to him three times, but the emperor admirably refused, stating it belonged to its rightful creator.
