About Kupwara

Kupwara district is located in the northwestern part of Kashmir Valley and shares its border with Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Known for its untouched natural beauty, the district encompasses some of Kashmir's most pristine valleys including Lolab, Machil, Keran, and Bangus. The name "Kupwara" is believed to be derived from Sanskrit "Kupu-pur," meaning "the town of Kupu," an ancient sage.

Despite its proximity to the Line of Control, Kupwara offers immense tourism potential with its virgin landscapes, alpine meadows, and diverse wildlife. The district is home to several endangered species and features the famous Bangus Valley, often compared to Switzerland for its scenic beauty. Rich in biodiversity, the region is perfect for eco-tourism and adventure activities.

Nearest airport is Srinagar (90 km). Regular taxi and shared cab services available from Srinagar to Kupwara.

By Road

Connected via NH701. Regular bus service from Srinagar (90 km). Some border areas require special permits from civil administration.

Prominent Tourist Places

Lolab Valley

One of Kashmir's most beautiful yet unexplored valleys, located 40 km from Kupwara. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and covered with thick forests of pine, fir, and deodar. The valley is divided into two parts: Kalaroos and Kralpora. Famous for its natural springs and traditional wooden houses.

Bangus Valley

Often called the "Switzerland of Kashmir," Bangus is a vast alpine meadow at 3,000m altitude. Accessible from both Kupwara (via Chowkibal) & Handwara ( via Mawer and Rajwar) offers breath-taking views. The valley is covered with wildflowers in summer. Perfect for camping and trekking.

Machil

A scenic border town located near the Line of Control. Known for its pristine beauty, Machil Valley is surrounded by high mountains and dense forests. The Kishenganga River flows through the valley. Famous for trout fishing and stunning Himalayan views. Special permits required.

Keran

A beautiful border village situated on the banks of the Kishenganga River. Offers panoramic views of Pakistani-administered Kashmir across the river. Known for its scenic beauty, wooden houses, and hospitality. Popular for river rafting and camping. Permits required for entry.
