Gulmarg, literally meaning "Meadow of Flowers," is a picturesque hill station and one of Asia's premier ski resorts, located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. Gulmarg Gondola

Alpather Lake

Located at the foot of Apharwat Peak, this picturesque alpine lake remains frozen until June. A popular trekking destination offering stunning views and serene natural beauty. The trek is moderate and takes about 3-4 hours from Gulmarg.

St. Mary's Church

A quaint stone church built in 1902 during the British era. Though small, it adds historic charm to Gulmarg and serves as a reminder of the town's colonial past. The church is still functional and welcomes visitors.

Carry warm clothes even in summer; altitude makes it cold. Book accommodations in advance during peak season. Gondola tickets sell out quickly - book early. Acclimatize properly at high altitude. Carry ID proof; it's required at checkpoints.

How to Reach

By Air

Nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport (56 km). From the airport, take a taxi to Gulmarg (approximately 2.5 hours). Most hotels can arrange airport transfers. Pre-booking transfers is recommended.

By Road from Srinagar

Well-connected by road (51 km, approximately 2 hours). Route: Srinagar → Magam → Tangmarg → Gulmarg. Taxis available from Srinagar (₹2,500-3,500 round trip). Shared cabs available from Tangmarg to Gulmarg. Road is well-maintained but winding.

By Local Transport

JKSRTC buses operate from Srinagar to Tangmarg (13 km from Gulmarg). From Tangmarg, take a shared taxi or union cab to Gulmarg. Budget-friendly option but less flexible than private transport.

Things to Know

  • Gulmarg is located at high altitude - take it easy on the first day to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness.
  • Mobile network connectivity can be patchy, especially at higher altitudes. BSNL has better coverage than other operators.
  • ATMs are limited - carry sufficient cash. A few ATMs are available near the market, but they often run out during peak season.
  • Winter roads can be closed due to heavy snowfall. Check weather and road conditions before traveling.
  • Gondola operations are weather-dependent and may be suspended during strong winds or poor visibility.
  • Professional ski instructors charge ₹2,000-4,000 per day. Equipment rental costs approximately ₹1,500-2,500 per day.
  • The name "Gulmarg" was given by Sultan Yusuf Shah in the 16th century, who was inspired by the colourful flowers found here.
