About Budgam

Budgam district is centrally located in Kashmir Valley and serves as a vital link between Srinagar and other districts. The district derives its name from the town of Budgam, which means "place where the wise dwell." Known for its rich cultural heritage, pristine meadows, and historical sites, Budgam offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and ancient history.

The district is home to several important tourist destinations including Doodhpathri (Valley of Milk), Yusmarg (Meadow of Jesus), and Tosa Maidan. Budgam also houses the Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, the main gateway to Kashmir. The region is known for its almond cultivation, traditional handicrafts, and warm hospitality.

Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport is located within Budgam district (8 km from Budgam town). Well connected to major Indian cities.

By Road

Excellent road connectivity via NH44. Located 12 km from Srinagar and approximately 300 km from Jammu with regular bus and taxi services.

Prominent Tourist Places

Doodhpathri

Known as "Valley of Milk," this stunning meadow at 2,730m altitude is named for the milky white appearance of its water streams. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense pine forests, it offers pristine natural beauty. Ideal for camping, picnics, and nature photography.

Yusmarg

Literally meaning "Meadow of Jesus," Yusmarg is a scenic hill station located 47 km from Srinagar. At an altitude of 2,396m, it features rolling meadows, dense forests of pine and fir, and offers panoramic views of the Pir Panjal range. Popular for horse riding, trekking, and skiing in winter.

Tosa Maidan

A vast alpine meadow located at 3,000m altitude, covering approximately 24 sq km. Once used as an army firing range, now open for tourism. Offers spectacular views, wildflower carpets in summer, and excellent trekking opportunities.

Charar-e-Sharief

The shrine of Kashmir's patron saint, Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali (Nund Rishi). This revered Sufi shrine attracts devotees from all religions. The shrine complex features beautiful wooden architecture and is surrounded by saffron fields. Annual Urs celebrations draw thousands of pilgrims.

Nilnag Lake

A pristine high-altitude lake located near Yusmarg. Known for its crystal-clear blue waters surrounded by alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. The lake remains frozen during winter and offers excellent opportunities for trekking and nature photography.
